First Steps To Starting An Agricultural Business

Starting any business requires a lot of planning and forethought, but beginning an agricultural business is a unique challenge. Western Packaging is very familiar with the agricultural business, and we think these steps for how to start your own farming business are beneficial. Knowledge is potential power, and we want to ensure you go into your agricultural processing business informed and confident.

Create Your Business Plan

It is one thing to have a vision in your head and another to have it on paper. It is another thing actually to start and move forward. Putting a clear and concise course of action down on paper will help you stay organized and help you share your ideas with others so they can touch, see, and feel.

Once you have completed your business plan, such as building the foundation for starting agricultural business opportunities, others can review and support your ideas. After completing your business’s foundation, you can work on spreadsheets, budgets, and other financial documents.

Find A Support System

Surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Not just those who own farms but a variety of people who can give you sound advice on different aspects of the agriculture industry. You will want to meet with the USDA to discuss your business plan, land purchase, and how to reach your goals.

Between the USDA and other farming industry organizations, they will guide and direct you to funding, grants, and other helpful resources for agricultural startups. Make sure that you visit the USDA website and search for all the required information you need to bring before you meet with them. Be prepared, schedule an appointment, and get an advisor if you wish to help with some things you think are unfamiliar or intimidating.

Continue Your Education

You should never stop learning. Until you leave this earth, continuing your education should be a priority. Whether visiting your local bookstore or extending your college education, you should keep finding ways to learn more. Agricultural practices continue to change, and approaches to farming are constantly fluctuating. It is in your best interest to stay on top of these things.

Many organizations have programs and classes for new farmers. Take advantage of anything free and use these opportunities to network, get started, and build connections.

Structure Your Business

When you start your own business, you must determine how you want to set up your agriculture business. You can do this in various ways: partnerships, sole proprietorship, limited liability corporations, corporations, and standard corporations. Once you do this, you can register your business name with your state department.

Afterward, you can get an EIN number through the IRS and register for state and local taxes. You will want a list of all the permits and licenses you need to operate your agriculture business. If you plan on hiring employees, make sure you understand your responsibilities as an employer.

Do Your Financing Research

No matter the amount of money you need to finance your venture, you need to do your research. Talk with other farmers about their lenders and interview farming organizations like the USDA to find lenders that work with the unique needs of the agricultural industry. Research online and call highly-rated banks.

Consider Climate, Soil Quality, And Accessibility

When selecting the ideal location for your agricultural business, it’s imperative to consider the following:

Climate

Climate plays a significant role in determining the crops or livestock you can produce successfully. For instance, if you’re planning to grow crops, choose a region with a favorable climate that provides adequate sunlight, water, and temperature variations throughout the growing season. Similarly, if you’re raising livestock, consider the climate’s impact on their well-being, like temperature extremes or humidity levels.

Soil Quality

Soil quality is another crucial factor to consider when selecting a farm site. Conduct soil tests to assess its fertility, drainage, and composition, as different crops thrive in various soil types. Ensure the soil is suitable for your intended activities, and consider soil management practices to improve its quality if necessary. Also, evaluate the availability of water resources for irrigation. Access to reliable water sources is essential for crop production, especially in arid regions or during droughts.

Accessibility

Accessibility is also vital for the success of your agricultural business. Choose a location with easy access to roads, railways, and ports to facilitate the movement of products and equipment. Proximity to markets and distribution channels can also reduce transportation costs and enhance the competitiveness of your products. When selecting your farm site, one should consider the proximity to suppliers, support services, and potential labor pools.

Get Permits And Licenses

Securing necessary permits and licenses is essential for legal compliance in your agricultural business. Start by researching the regulations and requirements governing agricultural operations in your region, including zoning laws, environmental regulations, and health and safety standards. Get the required permits, licenses, and certifications from local, state, and federal authorities.

Equipment

Investing in essential equipment and infrastructure is crucial for the efficiency and productivity of your agricultural operations. Assess your needs based on the farming activities you plan to undertake: crop production, livestock farming, or agribusiness services. Purchase high-quality equipment like tractors, harvesters, irrigation systems, and storage facilities to support your production processes.

Insurance Coverage

When selecting insurance coverage for your agricultural business, work with a knowledgeable insurance agent or broker who understands the complexities of the farm industry and can help you assess your insurance needs.

Comprehensive insurance coverage can provide financial security in the face of various risks. Property insurance can protect your farm buildings, equipment, and inventory against damage or loss caused by fire, theft, vandalism, or severe weather. Crop insurance can mitigate the financial impact of crop failures, yield losses, or price fluctuations due to adverse weather conditions, pests, or diseases.

Liability insurance is also crucial for agricultural businesses, as it protects against third-party claims for bodily injury or property damage. This includes accidents involving farm machinery, contamination of neighboring properties, or foodborne illness outbreaks linked to your products. Liability insurance can cover legal expenses, settlements, and damages awarded in lawsuits.

Consider specialized insurance coverage like livestock mortality insurance, agricultural pollution liability insurance, or business interruption insurance. These policies can provide additional protection against risks that standard insurance policies may not address.

How To Create An Attractive and Successful Brand For Your Agricultural Business?

First impressions always stick with you no matter what. It is the one thing you will never forget about a person, place, or thing. Western Packaging has ways of sharing its brand and others with the world through its own type of branding. When you understand your mission, you can correctly brand your business and create growth and, hopefully, a positive memory in your consumer’s minds.

Branding is crucial for businesses as it is the foundation of their identity and reputation in the marketplace. A strong brand distinguishes a company from its competitors, communicates its value proposition, and builds customer trust and loyalty. Effective branding helps businesses attract new customers and encourages repeat business and referrals. It creates a memorable and consistent experience, making it easier for customers to recognize and connect with the brand across various touchpoints. Branding builds credibility and establishes emotional connections, increasing brand affinity and long-term success. In today’s competitive landscape, branding is essential for businesses to stand out, build brand equity, and drive growth.

What Is Branding?

Your brand communicates more than what you see on a label or a package, although being a packaging company, we understand the value of attractive packaging. Branding goes beyond that packaging and communicates who you are, your vision, and your promise to the industry you belong to.

Your brand speaks for you, and you speak for your brand in every interaction. Your brand is how you talk to your local farmer or chef or what someone sees when they visit your website or social media page. When you think about your brand, think beyond the cute logo you chose and envision relationships that speak volumes about the most minor details of your business.

Do Not Neglect The Value of Branding

As farmers, it is easy to see branding as something for the new age or that your dollars are better spent elsewhere. Dismissing your brand when you think purchasing feed or farm equipment is understandable, but with the correct branding, you can eventually invest more in those areas. What people see when they see you and your product is essential.

What if someone knocked on your door selling candy bars, and you felt their apparel was sloppy and unkempt? You just made a judgment based on outward appearances. As much as we say that outward appearance doesn’t matter in some cases, it does.

The Role of Brand in Marketing

If you don’t have a visible brand, you can stagnate your marketing strategy and not reach anywhere near your farm’s true potential. Your brand is what attracts your customer base, and if you haven’t put any thought into it, you cripple your marketing strategy and, in the end, your earning potential and community presence. With a clear and transparent branding campaign, you can express the heart of your farm, produce, or livestock.

Whether your values are fresh, clean, organic, cost-effective produce, or what you have, this is represented in a brand marketing strategy. Your job as a producer is to prove who you are and gain the trust of your customers. That means that with every interaction, you must prove that your produce is fresh, high-quality, and worth investing in.

Making Your Brand Great

If you lack technical skills, whether the internet or social media you cannot let that stop you. Farmers commonly assume they can’t pursue specific marketing strategies if they lack these skills, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The ability to take pictures or navigate web development helps, of course, but it is not the number one qualification.

Caring about your business, vision, and people is the main factor in making your brand great. Taking the time to create a website that is clean and conveys your message will affect your business significantly. People notice the time and energy you put into your labels, online presence, and your relationship with your community.

Did You Know Environmental Conditions Can Affect Your Packaging?

Have you ever wondered why sometimes your package arrives looking a little worse for wear? Well, it might just be because of the environment it traveled through. That’s right – environmental conditions can have a big impact on your packaging. These factors can vary a lot depending on where your package is being shipped to and from.

Receiving or sending packaged goods damaged by environmental conditions can have a major impact on your bottom line. Environmental conditions can affect packaging by things such as rain, sunlight, and winds if not protected. It’s important to understand the ways your packages can be damaged and the steps you can take to prevent damage.

SUNLIGHT, HUMIDITY, AND HEAT DAMAGE

Your packages can be exposed to sunlight, humidity, and heat damage in transit depending on your shipping route. Extreme temperatures, especially in uncontrolled environments like cargo holds, can affect the integrity of packaging materials and the stability of contents.

Sun damage occurs when your packages have been exposed to too much sunlight and can affect the appearance of your packages. Sunlight exposure can leave your packages whitewashed, making them harder to read. Humidity can weaken packaging materials like cardboard and paper, leading to tears and breaks. It also creates ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth. Labels may smudge or peel off, and perishable items can spoil faster. Heat damage can also negatively affect your packages, especially depending on the type of product that you are shipping. Understanding the effects of heat damage is especially important if you are transporting food or liquids. With heat damage, foods, and liquids can go bad quickly. Products with paints and plastics can also melt under extreme heat.

WATER DAMAGE

Water damage can also be unfortunately common in the transit process. Your packages can receive water damage for many different reasons, some of which can easily be in your control. The most obvious way your packages can receive water damage is by rain, which can seep through to your packages if shipping containers aren’t sealed properly.

Contrary to popular belief, rain isn’t the most common form of water damage to packages. Container rain, also known as container sweat, is one of the most common forms of water damage to imported goods. Container rain happens when water accumulates on the coldest parts inside the freight container, falls, and spreads throughout the container. This can happen as often as every 24 hours during the package’s journey.

ALTITUDE

Believe it or not, altitude can also affect your packaging. When your package is traveling through different altitudes, especially during air transport, it’s subjected to changes in air pressure. As altitude increases, the air pressure decreases. This change in pressure can have several effects on your packaging:

  • 1. Expansion and Contraction: Sealed packages, especially those containing air or other gases, can expand or contract as they move to higher altitudes. This is because the pressure inside the package remains constant while the external pressure decreases. For example, a sealed bag of chips might puff up at higher altitudes due to the decrease in external pressure.
  • 2. Bursting: In extreme cases, the decrease in air pressure at higher altitudes can cause sealed packages to burst open. This is more likely to occur with packages containing liquids or gases that are under pressure. For instance, a bottle of carbonated soda might leak or explode if not properly packaged for air travel.
  • Seal Integrity: The integrity of seals on packages can be compromised at higher altitudes. Sealed packages like those with adhesive closures or zip-lock bags, may experience leaks or openings due to the difference in pressure between the inside and outside of the package.
  • Packaging Materials: Certain packaging materials may behave differently at higher altitudes. For example, materials like plastic or rubber may become more pliable, while materials like paper or cardboard may become more rigid.

To mitigate the effects of altitude on packaging, it’s important to use appropriate packaging materials and techniques.

WAYS YOU CAN PREVENT ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE

Millions of containers are shipped across the world every year and 10% of those are discarded due to water damage. This results in millions upon millions of dollars worth of packages being wasted per year. Here are some of the ways you can prevent water damage from happening to your packages:

  • Ventilating shipping containers – Ventilating your shipping containers results in less condensation within the container allowing the container to breathe and not accumulate moisture
  • Dehumidifiers – A dehumidifier can help eliminate moisture from the container
  • Grafotherm – Grafotherm is a non-condensation coating that retains moisture within its structure
  • Container lining – Container linings help control the temperature of the container, preventing temperature changes that may result in condensation

You should take every step possible to prevent water damage to your packages. This water damage can result in thousands or even millions of dollars worth of damage.

OTHER WAYS YOUR PACKAGES CAN BE AFFECTED

Environmental conditions aren’t the only way your packages can be affected during transit. Your packages can be damaged in transit when trucks bounce over roads or if items fall during transit. Items falling can also result in packages getting lost or getting mixed up with other packages.

Stacking packages in trucks, warehouses, or storage facilities can subject lower packages to excessive weight, leading to compression or crushing of the packaging and its contents. Exposure to moisture, whether from rain, snow, or condensation, can lead to water damage, warping, or deterioration of packaging materials, as well as the contents inside. Rough handling during loading, unloading, and transit can lead to packages being dropped, thrown, or crushed by heavy items. This can cause structural damage, dents, or punctures to the packaging.

Theft is also a very real concern with packages. If your items aren’t properly stretch-wrapped or packaged, thieves can easily access your packages and take whatever their heart desires. Stretch wrapping is a great way to prevent your packages from falling victim to thieves while in transit.

WESTERN PACKAGING CAN PROTECT YOUR PACKAGES

To minimize the risk of damage during shipping, it’s important to use sturdy packaging materials, provide adequate cushioning for fragile items, secure packages tightly, and label them appropriately to indicate special handling instructions.

Western Packaging offers products that can help you protect your packages while they are in transit. We offer items such as stretch film, bulk bags, and straps that can help keep your packages safe. Don’t let environmental conditions affect your packaging! You can take steps to make sure your items arrive safe and sound. Your recipient will thank you for it!

What are The Benefits of Polypropylene Bulk Bags?

When it comes to shipping, you need to be sure that your products are protected and shipped properly. This means using bags that are going to ensure safe transit from one location to another. Polypropylene bulk bags are a great way to move products such as fertilizer and grain from location to location.

These bags are tough and durable, protecting the rigors of transportation. With their sturdy construction and ability to withstand heavy loads, polypropylene bulk bags give you peace of mind knowing that your products will arrive at their destination intact and undamaged. Plus, their versatility means they can be used for a wide range of materials.

What Is Polypropylene?

Polypropylene (also known as PP) is a thermoplastic made from a combination of propylene monomers. You can find polypropylene in a myriad of products, and it’s commonly used in packaging, special devices, and textiles. Here are some polypropylene advantages and why polypropylene is a good choice for a bulk bag:

  • Chemical resistance – Diluted bases and acids don’t react with polypropylene making it a strong choice when shipping cleaning agents, certain liquids, and more
  • Elasticity – Polypropylene is a tough material that can deform and stress without breaking. The material is more flexible than plastic, although it does experience plastic deformation early in the deformation process
  • Fatigue resistance – Polypropylene holds its shape and form after torsion, bending, and flexing, making it a sturdy option

Polypropylene is a great choice because of its toughness and durability. When shipping products, it’s important that you can rely on your bags to hold the product. With polypropylene, you rarely have to worry about the bag breaking or collapsing due to the weight.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF POLYPROPYLENE BAGS?

Polypropylene bulk bags, also known as FIBCs (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers) or simply big bags, offer a range of benefits for various industries. Here’s why they’re a popular choice:

  1. Polypropylene bulk bags are strong and durable, able to withstand thousands of pounds. This makes them ideal for transporting and storing bulk materials.
  2. Compared to traditional packaging options like boxes or drums, polypropylene bulk bags are often more cost-effective. They require less material for production and can be reused multiple times.
  3. FIBCs are designed to maximize storage space. Their flexible nature allows them to conform to irregular shapes and sizes.
  4. Polypropylene bulk bags are available in a variety of designs, and sizes to suit different applications and industries. They can be customized with features like spouts, liners, and closures to meet specific requirements for handling, filling, and discharging various types of materials.
  5. Many polypropylene bulk bags are recyclable and reusable, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to single-use options. Their lightweight design also reduces transportation costs and carbon emissions compared to heavier packaging materials.
  6. FIBCs provide excellent protection and containment for bulk materials, shielding them from moisture, contamination, and exposure to the elements
  7. Polypropylene bulk bags are lightweight and easy to handle, making them suitable for manual filling, lifting, and transportation. They can be equipped with lifting loops or straps for convenient handling using forklifts, cranes, or hoists.

Bulk bags have a winning combination of advantages that make them an indispensable packaging solution for a wide range of industries and applications.

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

Polypropylene bulk bags help you move a large number of products, such as grain, fertilizer, and dirt. Wholesale bulk bags (also commonly known as FIBCS) come with liners that are designed to prevent moisture from forming inside the polypropylene big bag. If too much moisture is generated, it can quickly deteriorate the product.

Millions of items are shipped each year, and nearly 10% of products are thrown away due to water damage. This results in thousands of dollars worth of damage which can be devastating to your company. Selecting a sturdy polypropylene bag (PP bag) can help instill confidence when your items are being shipped and could even help save money on potentially damaged goods.

What Are Bulk Bags Used For?

Several different industries rely on bulk bags to safely and confidently ship their items from one destination to another. The food industry is one of the biggest users of bulk bags because the products shipped are often flakey, granular, or powdery products. Polypropylene (PP) wholesale is cheaper to manufacture and produce than custom, small-scale orders as well. In the US alone, nearly one billion bushels of winter, spring, and durum wheat were produced last year.

This wheat typically needs to be shipped from one side of the country to another. Bulk bags are used to transfer this wheat because they are the most reliant product to use during shipping. Other items that also require bulk bags include sugar, seed, nuts, potatoes, and flour.

Other Types

Several different types of bulk bags can be used in different situations. First and foremost, it’s important to understand just how much you plan to be shipping in each bag. Certain bags can only handle a certain weight, making it important you don’t overstuff a bag. Here are some of the types of FIBCs:

  • U-Panel Bags
  • Four-Panel Bags
  • Circular Woven Bags
  • Conical Bags
  • Form-Stable Bags

This wheat typically needs to be shipped from one side of the country to another. Bulk bags are used to transfer this wheat because they are the most reliant product to use during shipping. Other items that also require bulk bags include sugar, seeds, nuts, potatoes, and flour.

LESSER KNOWN FACTS ABOUT BULK BAGS

  1. Some polypropylene bulk bags are treated with UV inhibitors to protect them from degradation caused by exposure to sunlight.
  2. Certain polypropylene bulk bags are designed with anti-static properties to prevent the buildup of static electricity. This is particularly important when handling materials that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge like powders or chemicals.
  3. While polypropylene bulk bags are commonly used for industrial applications, there are also food-grade options available that comply with strict regulations for handling and transporting food products.
  4. Conductive Bags: In addition to anti-static bags, there are also conductive polypropylene bulk bags available. They are specifically designed to dissipate static electricity more effectively, providing enhanced protection for sensitive electronic components during transportation and storage.
  5. Many polypropylene bulk bags are recyclable and can be melted down and repurposed into new products, contributing to sustainability efforts and reducing environmental impact.

Can Hay Sleeves Really Save You Money

Producers must be made aware of the extent of hay losses or how simple and cost-effective it is to prevent such losses. Your business needs to maximize your bottom line and preserve supplies with as many cost-effective investments as possible. Hay sleeves can help protect your materials, ultimately improving your bottom line. Below are a few reasons why our team here at Western Packaging recommends using hay sleeves to protect your materials.

What Are Hay Sleeves And Why Use Them?

Hay sleeves are open-ended plastic coverings used by producers to protect their products, save money, and preserve valuable storage space. Hay sleeves produced using woven polypropylene, a woven material that is strong and highly durable, also have the added benefit of being water resistant. Woven polypropylene hay sleeves minimize hay production and storage issues like stretching, shrinking, and losses due to mildew growth.

Cutting Production Costs

In today’s market, where the price of producing anything seems to have reached all-time highs, it is no surprise that hay production is also among those counted. The cost of production has skyrocketed due to general cost increases such as fertilizer, fuel, agricultural chemicals, and labor, to name a few. Over the past few years, hay production costs have skyrocketed, leaving producers debating ways to cut costs and better preserve what they can produce.

A growing discussion and beneficial preservation technique among farmers today is using hay sleeves – breathable covers that safeguard your product and bottom line. Hay sleeves can be used for baling various dry crops, protecting your produce from the elements and other harmful environmental factors, and saving you money in the long run. Furthermore, they have a two-year shelf life and can be reused when handled and used appropriately.

Protecting Your Product

Unprotected hay stored outside frequently displays signs of severe weathering and quality degradation. Significant losses can happen quickly in conditions with high moisture content and extreme temperatures. If you live in a high-humidity environment, your product is at risk of bale damage. When exposed to moisture, large bales can suffer from water infiltration, spoilage, pest, and disease issues. This damage can have a noticeable negative impact on your bottom line and efficiency.

Your product is also at risk if you live in a dry environment. Dry environments can be hotbeds for microbial activity, leading to significant losses of forage dry matter. Covering your bails with hay sleeves can protect your product from issues stemming from both dry and wet environments.

Reducing Hay Loss

Hay quantity and quality are heavily affected by storage losses. Thus, over time, investing additional money, manpower, and equipment in hay storage could lead to substantial rewards. Unprotected bales can lose up to 37% of their product during normal storage periods. Depending on the storage location, normal storage periods can range from six months to 20 years. Using hay sleeves can drop your losses to 19%.

Hay sleeves stored outside and on the ground have a low estimated range of dry matter loss equaling 4-8 percent. That is significantly lower than other storage methods such as uncovered, covered, net-wrapped, and other baling and storage methods producers use. Moreover, hay sleeves combined with wrapping and elevation can further reduce hay losses. A loss of 30% of your product would mean a product with a value of $90 would instead be worth $63. Using hay bales and placing your products in the right location can help protect your products and investments. Loosing 30% on each of your bales will add up very quickly.

Your Hay Stays Fresh For Longer

Every year, the cost of hay production climbs higher and higher. Investing in high-quality hay sleeves is a smart choice for you and your business. Hay sleeves help keep your product fresh for longer, minimizing the money you spend on hay production. Hay sleeves help reduce decomposition.

They help protect your product from water, snow, ice, and ground moisture, reducing the chances that you will need to invest in replacement bails. Too many businesses suffer from wasting too much money on replacing bales due to damage. Hay bales can help protect your product, keeping it fresher for longer and with less investment into replacement or failing storage methods.

Cutting The Need And Cost Of Hay Twine And Additional Storage

If you’re looking for something to cover your bales, hay sleeves are a cost-efficient option that will help you save money in the long run. Old-style hay twine causes you to lose hay as it moves from one place to another. Hay sleeves will protect your product during transport. There is less space for loss and a more comprehensive covering over the hay. Less monetary loss from ruined hay can potentially avoided by using breathable hay sleeves as a secure and effective transport and storage option.

Hay sleeves are also highly beneficial options for those who don’t have the luxury of storing hay in a barn or are attempting to mitigate storage costs. Farmers can protect their hay from the elements without adding extra buildings by wrapping their dried product in quality hay sleeves.

Hay Bales Help Keep You And Your Product From Sweating The Small Stuff

Losses from weather and climate are challenging to control while harvesting bailed hay, but losses from storage should be cheaper and simpler to manage. After all, creating a bail product of excellent quality and high value requires a significant investment of time, money, and energy on your part. Hay sleeves don’t sweat, meaning your hay will be protected from moisture.

To shield from precipitation from above and wicking from below and in the soil, these plastic coverings are open on both ends of the bale. Nearly half of the hay loss in bales placed outside is due to moisture exposure, not from above but from below, from the very ground that your bales rest on. Your number one priority should be taking care of your product. Hay sleeves will help ensure your product is secure, fresh, and ready for sale or use.

Shop Quality Hay Sleeves At Western Packaging

Hay sleeves are an excellent investment if you’re ready to protect your bales from the elements. Here at Western Packaging, we offer a wide range of products that protect your product from damage. Our sleeves are made with breathable materials, meaning quick drying in case your product gets wet.

We also offer custom-sized, plain, or printed hay bale sleeves. You can contact us via phone, email, or direct mail. Our team looks forward to helping you protect your products while improving your bottom line!

What Can Bulk Bags Be Used For?

Bulk bags are a staple of the shipping industry and can be used to store and transport a wide range of goods. No matter the material you need to store or move around, bulk bag containers provide a versatile and secure way of storage. Our team here at Western Packaging recommends bulk bag products when you need to store a large number of products.

What Are Bulk Bags?

A bulk bag is a heavy-duty material handling bag or industrial container that is designed to transport free-flowing goods. These bags are designed with safe transport in mind. Bulk bags allow you to transport small materials by conducting varying levels of static.

The reason why these bags are popular in the transport business is because of their flexibility, strength, and efficient loading and transportation. If your company regularly loads a large amount of materials, such as sand, grain, or chemical materials, bulk bags are a great choice. These bags will make your life much easier. Here are some of the things bulk bag products can be used for:

The Food Industry

If you’re transporting materials that are flakey, granular, or powdery, bulk bags can come in handy. The United States often produces a billion bushels of winter, spring, and drum wheat each season. The majority of these are shipped across the country or exported to other countries.

Bulk bags’ flexibility and strength are big reasons why bulk bags are popular in the food industry. Other goods frequently transported by the food industry include sugar, seeds, nuts, potatoes, and flour. Most bulk bags used for shipping are also compliant with food safety standards set by the AIB, BRC, and the Global Food Safety Initiative.

The Construction Industry

The versatility bulk bags provide makes bulk bags the optimal shipping solution in the construction industry. When you’re shipping goods in the construction industry, the goods are usually heavy and irregularly shaped. Bulk bags are strong and versatile and can store a wide range of materials.

Potential uses of small or large bulk bags in the construction industry include shipping gravel, cement, resin, pallets, minerals, slag, and clay. The reason why bulk bags are popular in the construction industry is because bulk bags can withstand between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds each. If you’re looking to ship heavy or irregularly shaped products, bulk bag products may be the best choice for you.

The Chemical Industry

Bulk bags are designed to withstand electric charges and hazardous materials, making them an optimal choice for shipping chemical industry goods. Different degrees of static charge can be handled and dissipated using Type A, B, C, and D bulk bags. Specifically, Type C and D bags work most effectively for this usage. In Type D, sparks and discharges are prevented without grounding, as the fabric is anti-static and static dissipative.

In Type C, non-conductive polypropylene textiles are woven in a grid pattern with a grounding point. Other shipping options in the chemical industry, such as Gaylord boxes, don’t provide the flexibility that anti-static bulk bags do. Bulk bags can also act as hazardous waste removal bags.

FIBC Types And Manufacturing

Static electricity might build up when finely ground materials are poured into or released from FIBCs (or bulk bags). When packing flammable and combustible substances or in an area where combustible dust exists, it is crucial to prevent or remove the build-up of electrical charges. FIBCs come in four different types, each with distinctive features to ensure safe use. Here is some more information about the various FIBC fabric types and how to most effectively utilize them.

Type A Bulk Bags

Polypropylene with a standard weave and other non-conductive materials are used to make Type A FIBCs. As products or materials are filling or being removed from these bags, they may brush against or pass over the interior surface of the bulk bag, generating static electricity. Type A FIBCs do not offer any static protection if or when this occurs.

The area surrounding a Type A FIBC should be kept free from any flammable gasses or liquids. Type A bulk bag packaging should not be used for or in scenarios when:

  • When there is a flammable atmosphere present with a minimum ignition energy of ≤1,000mJ.
  • When the FIBC is in an area that has flammable solvents or gases present.
  • Storing or transporting any flammable product or materials.

Non-flammable materials and products can be transported safely by utilizing type A bulk bags.

Type B Bulk Bags

Because they are composed of non-conductive materials such as plain-woven polypropylene textiles, Type B FIBCs are similar to Type A bulk bags. Like Type A bulk bags, Type B bags cannot dissipate static electricity and its build-up. To prevent a situation where highly energetic and dangerous propagating brush discharges develop, Type B FIBCs are constructed from materials with a low breakdown voltage, unlike Type A’s. Type B bulk bags are safe for use when:

  • The immediate environment contains dust with ignition energies that are less than 3mJ.
  • There are no flammable solvents or gases in the immediate vicinity of the bag.
  • For safely transporting dry, flammable powders.

Despite its ability to stop brush discharges from spreading, Type B bulk bag containers are not regarded as anti-static bulk bags as they remain unable to eliminate electrostatic charges. For this reason, it is not recommended to utilize these bags in any circumstance or area where there may be flammable gases or solvents.

Type C Bulk Bags

Type C bulk bags are constructed from non-conductive polypropylene textiles interlaced with conducting threads that are often sewed in a grid pattern. They are also referred to as conductive FIBCs, anti-static bulk bags, or ground-able FIBCs. During filling and emptying, these conducting threads have to be linked to a specified earth/ground and be electrically interconnected. Type C bulk bags should not be used in instances when:

  • There is resistance between a groundable point and any FIBC location.
  • Whenever ground connection has been damaged or is completely nonexistent.

The safe usage of Type C bulk bags needs to have this connection to the earth/ground while filling and emptying. When this is present, these bags can safely be used to transport flammable powders and in areas where flammable gases, vapors, and dust exist.

Type D Bulk Bags

To safely avoid incendiary sparks, brush discharges, and propagating brush discharges, Type D FIBCs are constructed from antistatic and static dissipative fabrics. The fabric used to make Type D anti-static bulk bags has quasi-conductive threads in it, which safely release static electricity into the atmosphere through a low-energy corona discharge. This means that there is no need to link the FIBC to a designated ground/earth.

Type D FIBCs can safely and securely be used for:

  • Packaging and handling flammable products or materials, such as flammable powders.
  • Ideal for use in flammable and combustible environments where dusts, gases, and vapors may be present.

When conductive elements, such as grease or other flammable or combustible compounds, are present on the surface of the FIBC, they are not recommended to be used.

Ways That Your Company Can Enhance Community Relations

No matter what type of business you run a huge part of growth and building a strong foundation is community relations. Western Packaging works hard to do the same thing and we are happy to pass along some of our tips from working in this industry for so long.

Strong community relations also help to build trust and attract good workers. Additionally, community groups frequently possess insightful local knowledge that can result in creative, even superior, ideas. Let’s explore how your company can engage with and benefit from its surrounding community.

Keep The Lines Of Communication Open

When you are building relationships with the entire community you must make every effort to have a continuous dialogue between community leaders and their members. This means scheduling meetings throughout the year and frequent round table dialogues. Create regular forums for the community citizens to answer and ask questions.

Communities should be aware of major decisions within a company and they should be made aware well before they happen. When members of a community feel that they can share and ask questions they feel valued and are more willing to support you and walk with you through new changes. It is important to accept feedback often and continuously and think critically about what team members, leaders, and citizens are saying in order to have a successful and well-rounded company.

Create Opportunities For Community Participation

Many times companies are making decisions in boardrooms far removed from their clients and consumers. Inviting people into those meetings who have close ties with the community or stockholders is a good way to create stronger bonds. Hold outdoor community forums or round table meetings at community centers where everyone can access the meeting despite any socioeconomic limitations.

Their ideas are of great value and will allow you to understand how to more effectively reach your target audience. These meetings do not have to be held frequently but do need to be consistent. Communities should be included in decision-making processes, and decisions made by companies should be communicated to them along with the rationale behind them. Simple, direct language that is understandable to everybody should be used in communication, along with relevant narratives, examples, and localized idioms.

Invest Strategically

Many times companies have focused more on investing in community outreach such as sports leagues, food banks, or educational organizations. These are good things to invest in but there are better ideas and ways to add value to a community while growing your company and brand. It is extremely important that the community sees that you desire to give back but make sure that it is strategic and a win-win for everyone. Ask for feedback from community leaders and citizens and ask what initiatives or programs will help the area thrive. These may include job training, education, job creation, socioeconomic, and health programs.

Build Relationships With Community Leaders

Building relationships with community leaders build trust in the community as a whole. Education leaders, political figures, respected environmental organizations, youth leaders, religious organizations, and health providers. Relationships with these types of people only help to promote your vision and build trust that couldn’t be bought. They will also help you to predict and understand community culture and dynamics.

The approval of formal and informal leaders will give you the platform to spread your message and give you a one-up when you are ready to speak with larger leadership groups. Leadership is where everything starts and you cannot move forward in community relations without certain leaders’ blessings.

Review And Define Your Company Objectives And Goals

Your community relations activity should be built around your company’s mission statement and core beliefs. You can decide which initiatives to prioritize and which causes to support by remembering these things. Plans for community relations should follow the same format as other corporate objectives: they should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely). Setting reasonable objectives and avoiding expecting miracles is essential, as this will blow your budget and sap your staff’s motivation.

Identify The Project Type

Volunteering, investing in the community, and running social media campaigns are just a few of the many ways to give back to the community. Try to be as clear and honest as you can, sharing information as soon as possible—preferably in advance—about your decisions and any changes that might be expected. When members of your community feel included in the decision-making process, they will be far more supportive and engaging. Setting deadlines and defining the required staff members are just a few of the ways to tailor your strategy and select the technique that best fits your objectives and most closely aligns with your company goals.

Engage With Your Employees

It’s important to ask your staff about companies they respect for their community service and to get their ideas for future community initiatives, as they are also consumers. Employees should be encouraged to participate in local organizations, whether nonprofits, networking organizations, or something unrelated to work. It’s crucial that your employees feel encouraged to pursue interests outside of work since connections can develop anywhere. Their eagerness to become involved in the community outside of their regular work responsibilities may surprise you.

Boost Your Networking Efforts

You may see exponential development in your network by devoting effort to building relationships in the community. This might draw in new clients for your company and potential investors. Additionally, your efforts may result in better staff retention and relationships with nearby company owners for possible future collaborations. Your credit score will rise, and prospective clients will see your company as dependable, honest, and trustworthy.

Join Forces With Other Companies

In the ever-expanding field of community relations, looking to other companies in your industry for insight and inspiration is a good idea. Examining their programs and determining how they have improved their company might yield useful data. Additionally, partnering with another business on a community relations project may boost your brand’s visibility to new audiences and double your resources and knowledge base. And who knows a long-term partnership could result from it.

What To Look For In Produce Packaging

Western Packaging is aware of some of the stresses that small and large agricultural businesses go through. These days there is so much out there to offer that it can get pretty confusing and frustrating. What exactly should you look for in produce packaging when there are a dozen products and even more suppliers?

New farmers and agricultural employees can find it even more stressful because there’s a learning curve. What do you do when there is so much to learn and do and so little time. Well, reach out for help and get a lot of advice from those who have been there and done that. Eventually, you will find just what works for you, your produce, and your goals.

Focus On What Is Necessary

Start by thinking about what is necessary for certain laws and regulations, for your own safety and convenience, and your budget. Sustainable packaging may pull at your heartstrings but if it pulls too much at your wallet than you will have to keep looking. You want to make sure that the containers you use, keep your produce fresh and as picture-perfect as when you harvested it.

Produce packaging should prioritize convenience. It is a major motivator for produce packaging design and is a significant customer and store influencer. Think about the consumer and how they will feel about it. No one, I mean no one wants to fight for five minutes trying to open up their cherry tomatoes. Poor opinions about your brand might result from difficult-to-open packaging. Convenience for your customers is just as important as a convenience for yourself.

Cleanliness

When working with produce, there are a few characteristics that define high-quality packaging – and clean packaging is key. Cleanliness is huge, especially when dealing with food consumed by humans. There are safety regulations that must be followed, or it means fines and even a possible shutdown.
The primary motivations for pursuing hygienic packaging practices are preventing the spread of bacteria and marketing products that comply with sanitary regulations. A surefire way to lose customers is to have a dirty display. Your goal is to choose packaging that keeps the produce clean until it is home with the consumer.

Package According To The Unit Sold

When you sell things by weight, say two dollars a pound you will need to store in it in a package that will hold it by the pound, by the ounce, or whatever the unit is. This, of course, will look different for different types of produce.

Additionally, choice is a crucial component of convenience. Consumers are not in the market to buy vegetables by the pound, transport them home, and laboriously prepare them for meals.

Rather, they want food packaged and priced according to their needs, easily accessible, and relatively easy to use and dispose of when cooking at home. By overpacking your produce and packaging, you will create an exploding mess for the customer, leaving them looking elsewhere the next time they visit the grocery store.

Consider Where Your Produce Will Be Stored

Take into account the necessary storage conditions for your fresh products. Produce packaging that maintains the correct temperature, which is required if you have a cooler. This can be achieved with various packaging options, including insulated boxes and plastic bags. If you are a fruit and vegetable provider, consider how your produce will be transported from your farm to stores and distributors. Reusable bulk packaging like food-grade totes or baskets may also greatly benefit you and your produce.

For fresh fruit, you may need to use packaging that is easy to stack and carry, such as food-grade pallets or crates, or you may need to use bulk packaging that can hold a lot of products. Fresh produce can be stored and sent in pallets, which are ideal since they are durable and can withstand a range of temperatures without causing deterioration to the product. When transporting vulnerable fruits or vegetables, you should use packaging that provides additional protection against dents and bruising before placing your goods onto wooden pallets.

Safe For Transport

One of the most important factors when searching for produce packaging. Whether you are transporting your goods in the back of a pickup truck or a semi you want to make sure that it arrives safe and with minimal to no damage. When you are transporting your produce think about the functionality of it.

What is the best way to transport twenty cantaloupe to the farmers market? Things like tomatoes will need packaging the customer takes home their goods in and something else to carry multiple units for transport. Over time you will start to figure out what works best for you whether that be: cardboard boxes, breathable materials, handles or drawstrings, or even sustainable packaging.

Aesthetically Pleasing

This is usually one of the last things about packaging that we find necessary, but it does matter to an extent. Depending on where you are marketing and who you are marketing your produce to the appearance of your packaging means a great deal. Do not stress this if it is not in your budget. If it is, then buy an aesthetically pleasing but eye-catching label, bag, or carton. Your branding can help people to remember you and set you apart from other business owners.

Customers are more likely to be attracted to and purchase the contents if the packaging is visually appealing. Using a basket as your container might be the ideal method to grab attention and draw consumers if you’re selling fresh produce at a farmers market or roadside kiosk. Conversely, if you export fresh produce to supermarkets or other shops, you may want a more robust container with eye-catching branding and design.

Environmentally Friendly Packaging

For the sake of the environment and money saved over the course of several package uses, the best fresh fruit packaging should also be recyclable or compostable. Recyclable or compostable packaging is becoming increasingly popular as fresh produce farmers, and consumers place a greater emphasis on supply chain sustainability. Selecting packaging that is both recyclable and fits your needs is crucial for sustainable fresh produce delivery and helping to lessen the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and the ocean.

Whether it’s adopting clamshells, corrugated cartons, pints, or trays for fresh produce, every effort matters when it comes to becoming green and sustainable with packaging. Consumers are also more prone to view your product, company, and packaging efforts more favorably if they represent and reflect the importance of being “green” and environmentally friendly. Think about how the packaging will complement your brand identity.

How To Advertise Your Agriculture Business

Western Packaging has worked in the agricultural business for years, providing packaging that fits many personal needs. Advertisement is huge and our years of experience have allowed us to learn how to advertise your agriculture business. If you are just starting out advertising your agricultural business is scary.

It really doesn’t have to be a part of the business that creates anxiety. The more information you have the better you will feel about promoting yourself to the public. Confidence in what you bring to the table is the first step, after that, you can start on some of these easy steps for how to advertise your agriculture business.

Visit Farmers Markets

Farmers markets are becoming more and more popular as people are becoming more and more aware of the importance of shopping local. Visit the organizers of the major farmer’s markets in your state. Visit the actual farmers on a regularly scheduled market day as well.

Building relationships with the farmers and even the local commercial markets helps to put a face to a name. It will bring a personalized experience and will automatically put you ahead of other businesses.

Become A Member of A Cooperative

Joining a cooperative brings a level of professionalism to your business. The level at which you use or if you choose to use a cooperative all depends on the nature of your agricultural business. Partnering with other farmers allows you to take larger orders and delegate certain responsibilities within the cooperative.

Being a part of a cohesive group of agricultural professionals allows for a professional look that many consumers appreciate. The groupthink tank sets you up for success and allows for the work to be divided.

Use An Agricultural Advertising Agency

Agricultural advertising agencies specialize in building relationships in the agricultural sector. They understand the dynamics, the demographics, and the ins and outs that business owners overlook. We can guarantee you know your business, but marketing to the community is a different story and one that is sometimes better left to advertising professionals.

An agency can help target the right audience at the right time. They know how to speak to them and how to show them that your product is what they need.

Utilize the Internet and Social Media

The National Agri-Marketing is a great resource for agricultural professionals. This agency keeps you up to date with news within the industry and offers networking opportunities among the agricultural community.

Social Media is the new way to advertise for any and everything. If this is too tedious for you hiring a social media marketing expert will take that weight off your shoulders. Through social media, you are not only able to reach a larger audience at one time but you can also reach out to many of the younger agricultural professionals

Packaging and Display Advertise Your Agriculture Business

Packaging and display are widely overlooked in the agricultural business due to the nature of the work we do. Times are changing and so are the types of packaging that are available to hold everything from grain to dog food. The packaging is not only durable and reliable but it comes in a variety of colors that are ready to be customized with your personal logo.

This seems small but wherever your product goes it is a personal advertisement. You never know who is looking and inquiring about who and what your business is about.

Networking Events and Trade Shows

Attending networking events and trade shows is a crucial step in promoting your agricultural business. These events offer the perfect platform for you to showcase your products and services to a broader audience, including potential clients, investors, and partners. Western Packaging recommends leveraging these opportunities to make meaningful connections that can lead to fruitful collaborations and increased visibility for your brand.

Participating in these events not only helps in building a network but also in staying abreast of the latest trends and technologies in the agricultural sector. By engaging with peers and industry leaders, you gain insights into new market opportunities and strategies to enhance your business operations. Western Packaging encourages clients to actively participate in these gatherings to elevate their business profile and achieve sustained growth.

Educational Workshops and Seminars

Offering educational workshops and seminars is an excellent way to establish your agricultural business as a leader in the industry. By sharing your knowledge and expertise with others, you not only contribute to the growth of the agricultural community but also enhance the credibility of your brand. Western Packaging has seen many businesses thrive by adopting this approach, as it fosters trust and loyalty among customers and peers alike.

These educational initiatives can cover a wide range of topics, from sustainable farming practices to the latest in agricultural technology, depending on your area of expertise. Hosting these events not only positions you as an authority in your field but also provides an avenue for direct engagement with your target audience. Western Packaging supports these educational efforts as a means to promote your business while contributing positively to the industry.

Collaborations with Educational Institutions

Forming partnerships with educational institutions is another strategic avenue for advertising your agricultural business. By collaborating with schools, colleges, and universities, you can introduce your products and services to the next generation of agricultural professionals. Western Packaging believes that these collaborations can lead to innovative projects and research opportunities that benefit both your business and the academic community.

Such partnerships may include sponsoring student projects, providing internships, or contributing to curriculum development. These initiatives not only help in nurturing future talent but also in creating a positive image of your business among young professionals. Western Packaging encourages leveraging these collaborations to build a strong foundation for your brand’s future growth.

Customer Testimonials and Case Studies

Showcasing customer testimonials and case studies is a powerful method to advertise your agricultural business. Positive feedback from satisfied customers serves as a testament to the quality of your products and services. Western Packaging advises incorporating these testimonials into your marketing materials, website, and social media platforms to build trust and confidence among potential clients.

Case studies, on the other hand, provide detailed insights into how your products or services have successfully met the needs of your customers. They offer tangible evidence of your business’s impact and effectiveness. Western Packaging recommends creating a portfolio of case studies that highlight your business’s achievements and problem-solving capabilities, which can be a significant draw for new customers.

Community Engagement and Support

Engaging with your local community and supporting local causes can significantly enhance the visibility and reputation of your agricultural business. Whether it’s participating in community events, sponsoring local sports teams, or contributing to charitable causes, these activities demonstrate your commitment to the community’s welfare. Western Packaging has observed that businesses that actively engage in community support tend to enjoy a loyal customer base and positive word-of-mouth advertising.

This approach not only strengthens community ties but also aligns your business with social responsibility values, which are increasingly important to consumers. Western Packaging encourages businesses to look for opportunities to give back to their communities, as these efforts are mutually beneficial, fostering a supportive environment for your business to flourish.

The Benefits To Using BOPP Bags

Finding the right type of bag for storing and shipping your products is one of the most important decisions you will make for your business. If you ship things like seeds, grains, and other agricultural goods BOPP bags are a great way to package your product. Western Packing can tell you about the benefits to using BOPP bags.

If you have a product that has worked for years but there are so many new and innovative ways to package goods now that it is worth a second look. Western Packaging hopes to help you decide whether the BOPP bag is the right choice for you.

What Is a BOPP Bag?

BOPP stands for biaxially-oriented polypropylene and is a variation of polypropylene stretched flat. A reverse printed film is laminated on woven fabric and then made into a bag. These bags are made of bright and vivid colors and are an excellent choice for many of your agricultural needs.

They are different from other polypropylene bags because of their biaxial orientation making them the more durable choice for more rugged and heavy shipments. BOPP bags are also clear making them a good choice in the event you need to have a visual of your product.

Custom Options

Branding is a huge deal these days and maintaining the integrity of every package is almost as important as the contents. First impressions can make or break your business and your product. With BOPP bags you can easily customize every bag to reflect your personal logo, item number, or design.

The bags not only are easily printed on but are excellent when it comes to colorfastness. You needn’t worry about your marketing design coming off by the time it reaches its destination. BOPP bags are not only durable but they are reliable in numerous ways that truly count.

Versatility in Use

BOPP bags are not just limited to agricultural products; their versatility extends to a wide range of goods including pet foods, fertilizers, and even building materials. The robustness and clarity of these bags make them an ideal choice for showcasing your product while ensuring it remains protected. Western Packaging understands the diverse needs of businesses and can provide insights into how BOPP bags can be adapted to suit various products, enhancing your product’s appeal to consumers.

The adaptability of BOPP bags to different sizes, shapes, and printing options opens up endless possibilities for packaging solutions. Whether you are looking to package small quantities of artisanal products or large industrial goods, BOPP bags can be tailored to meet your requirements. Western Packaging is equipped to help you explore these customization options, ensuring your product stands out in the marketplace.

Strength You Can Trust

BOPP bags are stretched in two opposite directions creating a strong and durable product. The machines used to fill bags can put a lot of wear and tear on a bag but BOPP bags are known for standing up against some of the toughest machines.

If your goods are ever exposed to the elements this is a great choice for you. These bags are waterproof and will not leave you with soggy grains or seeds. They are also resistant to microbes and bacteria keeping out all those yucky creepy crawlers you can’t see.

Enhanced Product Safety

Ensuring the safety of your product during transit and storage is paramount. BOPP bags offer superior protection against physical damage, keeping your products secure from the point of packaging to the end user. The material’s resistance to tears and punctures means that even the most delicate items can be safely transported in these bags. Western Packaging prioritizes your product’s integrity and can demonstrate how BOPP bags provide an extra layer of security.

Additionally, the barrier properties of BOPP bags help maintain the freshness and quality of food products by preventing exposure to air and moisture. This is particularly important for perishable goods that require extended shelf life. Western Packaging can advise on the best practices for utilizing BOPP bags to maximize product safety and customer satisfaction.

Protects Against UV Rays

Ultraviolet light is known to cause degradation of certain food products and other various items. When your goal is to deliver a high-quality product and save your bottom line you want to do everything you can. BOPP bags are constructed to keep out these common UV rays and protect your food from possible sun damage.

Environmentally Friendly

With our country pushing more toward environmentally friendly options this is something a lot of manufacturers are thinking about. For them creating a product that will have the least negative impact on the environment is a win-win for everyone. BOPP bags are not biodegradable but they are recyclable and reusable.

The printing method used for these particular bags requires no water which means no waste water, another of the benefits to using BOPP bags for you and the environment. Consumers appreciate when companies are trying to do better and make a difference. This is definitely a good choice for all involved, including the planet.

Sustainability Focus

In an era where environmental responsibility is more critical than ever, BOPP bags stand out as a sustainable packaging option. Their reusability and recyclability align with green initiatives and consumer demand for eco-friendly products. Western Packaging is committed to sustainability and can help your business highlight this aspect of BOPP bags to your environmentally conscious customers.

Choosing BOPP bags is a step towards reducing your carbon footprint and contributing to a circular economy. By partnering with Western Packaging, you can explore how these bags not only meet your packaging needs but also support your environmental goals, making a positive impact on your brand image and the planet.

Ease of Use

For businesses looking for a user-friendly packaging solution, BOPP bags are an excellent choice. Their lightweight design and durability make them easy to handle, fill, and transport. Western Packaging can show you the various features that make BOPP bags a convenient option for both your packing team and your customers.

The simplicity of using BOPP bags can lead to increased efficiency in your packaging process. With options for resealable closures, these bags not only protect your product but also add to the convenience for the end-user, enhancing their overall experience. Western Packaging is ready to assist in integrating BOPP bags into your packaging line, simplifying your operations and delighting your customers.

Cost-Effectiveness

Choosing the right packaging solution is not only about durability and aesthetics but also about cost-effectiveness. BOPP bags offer a significant advantage in this area due to their long-lasting nature and ability to withstand rough handling. This reduces the need for frequent replacements, ultimately saving your business money in the long run. Western Packaging can guide you through the cost benefits of opting for BOPP bags, ensuring that you get the most value out of your packaging choices.

Moreover, the efficiency of BOPP bags in packaging and shipping operations can lead to decreased operational costs. Their lightweight nature contributes to lower shipping costs, while their strength minimizes product loss due to bag failure. With the help of Western Packaging, you can analyze your current packaging expenses and see how switching to BOPP bags could lead to substantial savings for your business.
