Your Future is Our Future...

How To Stay Safe While Farming In The Winter

Are you new to farming or have been farming your entire life and working on farming in the winter? There is a major difference in farming in the winter than there is in any other season during the year. You have to worry about the snow and ice on your plants and your livestock. Finding the best way to store your food for yourself and your animals as well.

What To Wear While Farming

Before you start worrying about your plants and livestock, make sure you are dressed properly first. Nothing worse than freezing while trying to support your family. Of course, this all depends on where you live. As we all know, winters can range from harsh and frigid to very mild and rainy. So what you wear will all depend on where you live.

It would be best to dress in layers. It’s always easier to take clothes off than try to find more to put on while out working. Make sure you have proper shoes as well. Having boots that are waterproof is essential. If you live in an area with harsh winters, insulated boots are just as important. The cost is well worth it to keep you warm while working on the farm. Nothing worse than having freezing toes throughout the day.

Which Type Of Bags To Use For Storing Or Shipping

Are you not sure which kind of bag to use when you are storing or shipping food? There are many options to choose from at Western Packaging. It all just really depends on what you are shipping or storing. You can choose from bags and straps for your farm.

If you want to save more of your hay and cut down on the overall cost, look at getting hay sleeves. This helps keep more of the hay in than the usual twine that has been used for years. Any time you move your hay with twine, you will lose some, but when using the sleeves it stays in place.

Stay Healthy While Working

When out working in the fields, sometimes you aren’t close to home and can just run back inside for a quick bite. Making sure your body is fueled properly is extremely important. The way to do this is by eating fruits, veggies, and good protein. These foods will keep you going strong all day long.

You will also want to stay hydrated if you don’t want your muscles to stay energized. On those extra cold days, it’s a good idea to keep a thermos full of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. This is going to help warm you up a little.

Knowing When To Call It Quits For The Day

Working long hours is pretty standard when you farm. Just remember that it is ok to take a break here and there. Knowing your limits is very important. If you are sick or hurt, you can’t work on the farm either. So knowing the signs of needing a rest break.

There is never a day when there isn’t work that needs to be done. Of course, there are things that need to be done every day, but some things can wait until the next day. So make sure you know what those are and know how hard you can work yourself. You are only one person and can only do so much in a day.
